Exhibition introduction:
Between Home and the Sea: Fluid Belonging frames the ocean as a metaphor for emotion, memory, and identity, tracing Masa Tung’s movements from her hometown of Keelung—departing, returning, and re-engaging with the world. Through leather-based constructions, wooden clogs, seafood-derived imagery, slide projections, and textile works, the exhibition weaves a fluid narrative of belonging shaped by local landscapes, familial histories, and a distinctly feminine perspective.
Exhibited Works:
Blue Sea, Stitched draws from the chromatic depths of Keelung’s Zhengbin Harbor, transforming digital leather prints and hand-stitched fragments into a tactile stratum of time. Tidal Steps of the Sea consists of twelve clog-based pieces imprinted with leather-printed seafood motifs, echoing the labor and presence of the artist’s grandfather at the local fishery association, while invoking the seasonal rhythms of a harbor city. Moving Shelter extends Tung’s vocabulary of bag-making, using leather “cardboard boxes” to contemplate migration, transition, and the re-placement of home. Layers of Time reassembles childhood imagery through slide projection, allowing light and sound to trigger the reanimation of memory. The exhibition also features Tung’s textile works created for the Osaka World Expo, fostering a dialogue on cultural exchange and climatic sensibilities across island nations.
Threaded by the metaphor of the sea and the gesture of stitching, the exhibition invites viewers to reconsider how place, memory, identity, and belonging are shaped—not as fixed entities, but as forms that drift, move, and remain quietly tethered to the tides.
